But, however e though dizem a mesma coisa e não servem nos mesmos lugares. But é conversa: rápido, no meio da frase, sem cerimônia. However é escrito, quase sempre abre a oração e vem seguido de vírgula — usá-lo numa mensagem de voz soa como quem lê um comunicado. Though faz o oposto e é o mais idiomático dos três: ele costuma aparecer no FIM da frase falada, como um "mas" jogado depois. Repare, ao traduzir, que a informação que interessa está sempre depois do contraste; o que vem antes é concessão. Inverter as duas metades troca o que a pessoa realmente quis dizer.
Traduzir frase inteira ensina o que traduzir palavra não ensina: a ordem, o tempo verbal e a preposição só aparecem quando a frase existe. Cada uma destas aceita 12.6 formas diferentes em média — porque quase nunca há uma resposta única, e reconhecer as variantes é metade do trabalho de entender quem fala.
