Além da regra de nunca pôr for antes de verbo, existe uma distinção que quase ninguém ensina: for + verbo terminado em -ing descreve para que serve uma COISA, e to + verbo descreve a intenção de uma PESSOA. Uma faca é for cutting; eu peguei a faca to cut. As duas frases são corretas e falam de coisas diferentes. O outro caso é o "para que", com sujeito próprio na segunda metade — "liguei para que ele soubesse" —, que exige a construção com sujeito repetido em inglês. Traduzir isso com to produz uma frase em que a segunda ação parece ser de quem fala, e não do outro.
Traduzir frase inteira ensina o que traduzir palavra não ensina: a ordem, o tempo verbal e a preposição só aparecem quando a frase existe. Cada uma destas aceita 10.3 formas diferentes em média — porque quase nunca há uma resposta única, e reconhecer as variantes é metade do trabalho de entender quem fala.
